Joe Biden, the Vice President of the United States said he was very comfortable with same-sex marriage, a view, which appeared to be different with his boss on the social issue that is a hot button. On Meet the Press, on Sunday, Biden was pressured into answering if the Obama administration is going to try to legalize same-sex marriage during their second term in the White House.

He said he would be open to such a change, but the president, Biden said, sets the final policy for the country. I am comfortable with women getting married to women and men getting married to men and heterosexual women and men marrying one another and having the same rights; all the same civil liberties and all the same civil rights. Obama said he is in favor of civil unions, and is not officially endorsing same-sex marriage. However, the last time asked, Obama said his opinions on the situation were evolving.

A gay marriage endorsement by Obama could help to energize Democratic supporters before the election in November, but risk upsetting some of the independent conservative voters, who tend to hold conservative views with regard to many social issues.

David Axelrod a campaign aide for Obama played down the differences, if any, between the vice president and Obama. He said on Twitter Biden was mentioning all couples who are should have all the same rights. Axelrod said that is exactly what the president’s position was.

Human Rights Campaign, a gay’s right group, said it was encouraging to hear Biden’s comments.
